How about a paradigm shift?

A lesson from the past was better assimilated when notes were taken ... whether the notes were revised or not. The hand that moves to write connected the lesson to different parts of the brain. The brain thinks much faster than the speed of speech. Taking notes focuses additional thoughts on the interruption and cross-reference of lesson information. How can the computer be used?

Do not exaggerate the obvious, but a computer is a tool, a powerful tool. People learn to appreciate the power of using a tool. As in History, a tool not only makes the work go away. Do not! It changes the way we do work. But much more important, it means that we also have the power to do a lot more work!
Then I suggest we raise the bet. Expect more [and better] work from people with larger tools.

I suppose this is negative for pitman shorthand

I imagine there are national/cultural differences about such things and class differences as well.
Of course, there really should be students who challenge the teacher, I mean not just asking a question, but presenting an argument.
It would be a bit interesting if the experiment were extended a bit ... oh its fun to experiment with the students. I wonder how students with stenographic skills would do in such an experiment.
I imagine that the best students in terms of total understanding of their own potential would be those who did not attend the conferences and had a recording of them to listen to in their free time (or those who saw the same conference online)

Students shouldn't be learning during lectures
He learned the material before the conference began. The conference should serve to review what they learned and help clarify any point that has caused confusion.
If you listen to the material for the first time in a conference, you are very behind and you need to work hard to catch up

Take notes and often do not take anything out of the conference because I try to copy the whiteboard. Classes that have electronic slides published on a website such as Blackboard are now common and useful. If the student is using the device for the conference that is presented, it is not a distraction and helps ensure that all the information presented is collected. A video recording is also useful but not very efficient to review later.
Students should not be learning during classes. They should have already

If you listen to the material for the first time at a conference, you are far behind and need to work hard to catch up.
